Sungai Kemensah, Bug Hunting

This trip was a courtesy of Fotomedia Malaysia. The outing was dedicated for macro shot assignment. Location choosen was at Sungai Kemensah, Ampang, Selangor just behind Zoo Negara. The reason for this location was because there were a lot of bugs’ life here. According to En. Emran, he managed to capture rare species of hopper, fly, etc.

We started early in the morning around 9.00 a.m. There were around 20 photographers, who participated in this trip. After we got to know each other, we had a briefing about the assignment by En. Emran. I was given Raynox magnifier by En.Pokcik. I was using my 50mm lens with Raynox magnifier, a great start for newbies. The magnifier is equal to macro lens by ratio 1:1 and it’s cheaper and easier to handle.

As for lighting, I was using external flash with diffuser made of fold tracing paper. The light must be pointing at the object using the diffuser. Camera setting , F=16, TV=1/125, ISO=100. Only change light FEC if necessary. If the light is too strong, then change FEC to low , vise versa.

Here is the result for my 1st macro shot. Don’t ask me anything about the bugs species, honestly I don’t know. Every bug looks weird if you look up closely. This assignment were very tricky, you would need to get close enough to capture the shot. Most of the time the bug flew away.

We didn’t travel all around Sg Kemensah. We stayed at a few places and checked the details of each tree. There are millions of bugs that remained camouflaged, which was really hard to catch that they were there. Also, we checked underneath the leaf, they probably stayed hidden beneath it.

Overall, the trip was quite fun as I was learning new things. All photographers were keen to share their knowledge. There would be another trip in nearest future. Hopefully I would be more prepared with my own macro lens.
