Sungai Congkak Hulu Langat, Bug Hunting

This is an entry for macro shot, which was organised by FotoMedia,the same team from where we did our last macro shot. Since everyone was eager to learn more in depth about macro shots, En. Emran suggested to give it a try at Sungai Congkak. It was a last minute arrangement that was posted on the forum the night before we went.

Hutan Lipur Sungai Congkak is a reserve forest of Hulu Langat. It is located 55km from Kuala Lumpur. From Cheras – Kajang highway, after you paid RM1 toll, take the direction to Hulu Langat B52. The road will lead you to Pangsun. Sungai Congkak is a part of Hutan Lipur Selangor. The place is well equipped with public facilities, such including a camping ground, picnic spots, chalets, rest shelters, public toilets and parking space.

The entrance fee was RM 1. About 6 photographers participated in this trip. We started off early morning hoping we’d find more insect species, compared to the ones in the first trip. One tip for macro bug hunting, any place with nearby pool of water, i.e. river or pool, lake, is a potential place for a macro subject. That was why all recreational park is surrounded by photographers like us.

Surprisingly it turned out that there wasn’t an insect to be found at all. This could probably be due to human factor, as the recreational park was under construction. They were constructing the pathway from the carpark up to the waterfall.

I also noticed that in this trip, there wasn’t any mosquito around. The place might be sprayed with insecticide, since dengue fever and cikukunia were currently an outbreak in Malaysia. All mosquitoes were dead including the insects.

Overall, Sungai Congkak is the best place for family recreation. Crystal-clear water, roaring rapid cascading river are the highlights of the Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest. As for photography, I feel that Sungai Congkak will be best for Slow Shutter type photo, rather than for macro shot.
