After a few weeks macro shooting, this time we are moving to new chapter called strobe. Strobist outing was organized by Photosantai. The senior photographer advised us to plan our investment properly. My 1st strobist outing, at Taman Batu Metropolitan, Off Jln Ipoh, I came with basic dslr unit and 1 flashlight (Nissin Di622). The rest of the equipment was loaned by En. Emran. He bought 2 strobist set to make this outing happen. Before we started shooting, we were given tutorial by Abg Mie (miephoto). This is my 1st strobist shot and the result is outstanding.
What is a Strobist?
A Strobist is a photographer who uses off-camera flash. This generates more interesting, flexible and creative lighting options than when using on-camera flash. Generally small flashes are used, it is not necessary to purchase full-on studio lighting.
To be a Strobist, as a minimum you need at least one flash that you can trigger while it is off the camera. You may also want to invest in a low-cost light stand and umbrella to use with the flash. All up you could be in business for very little investment. (Strobist’s have an unofficial motto – “Cheap is good”).
oh ya ! Strobe = Flashlight = Speedlight . It’s all the same thing
What is minimum requirement for strobist ?
1 slave unit flash light
1 umbrella (white or silver)
1 lighting stand (huge tripod)
1 umbrella adaptor (swivel bracket)
Strobist set is around RM300, excluding flashlight. The more expensive the flashlight, is usually of a better quality. I won’t recommend Nissin flashlight (the one I’m using) as it gives me problem when using slave mode. During outdoor outing, I find out that Nissin flashlight doesn’t trigger when using slave mode. At first I thought that I was too far away from the flashlight, but out of 10 close shots with Nissin slave unit, only 1 succeeded. Poor Nissin!

After the 1st successful strobist outing, the 2nd strobist outing is a bit “happening”. This time, there were 20 photographers who participated at Putrajaya.

After a few hours taking pictures, we were rushing to find the best spot for sun set photography. The best spot is at PICC, near the helipad as you can see good view of Putrajaya. Unfortunately, PICC is closed to visitors. We parked our car at the bridge near PICC. The bridge is called Seri Gemilang Bridge.

Seri Gemilang Bridge is a ceremonial bridge in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It connects Heritage Square with Putrajaya Convention Centre (PICC). The bridge has a main span 120 meters (394 ft) long, with a 60-meter (197 ft) span at each end, for a total length of 240 meters (787 ft). There are six traffic lanes, each 3.5 meters (11.5 ft) wide. The deck level above the water is 36.75 meters (121 ft) at the center of the bridge.

This sructure is a water damn use as a barrier for retaining the lake at Putrajaya. This dam is 390 hectares wide and is located on the South East of Putrajaya, at Precinct 5. The dam serves as a water level control for Putrajaya Lake and allows the lake water to flow out to River Chuau.
After Dawn, we went to Taman Warisan Pertanian for Maghrib Prayers and “Sembang Tea Tarik” or also known as “lepak”. Definition “lepak” or “T.T.”
1) To hang out with friends, loiter about and do absolutely nothing (lagha). Commonly used in Malaysia.
2) Chill
3) Lepaking – the act of lepak
As my personal view, this is the best Malaysian way get to know each other. You wont get this atmosphere anywhere else. The food court is open till late night. Everyone seemed happy with the outing. We talked from photography, politics, jobs till we are tired (or maybe nothing to talk about, haha). Then everyone went home.
